Petrol prices in Maharashtra's Parbhani touched Rs 90 per litre— the highest in India— on Monday.

While petrol was sold at Rs 89.97 per litre, diesel was offered at a price of Rs 77.92 per litre, according to Sanjay Deshmukh, president of Parbhani district petrol dealers association (PDPDA).

"It is 89.97 per litre today... It is just 3 paise less than Rs 90," Deshmukh told DH over phone.

Parbhani is nearly 510 km from Mumbai and is nearly 200 km from Aurangabad, the headquarters of the Marathwada region.

The Parbhani town has eight petrol stations and the rest are spread across the district.

"There is not much difference in petrol price in the city and the district, just a few paise here and there," Deshmukh said.

He said that his association is in touch with Uday Lodh, president of Federation of All Maharashtra Petroleum Dealers Association (FAMPEDA), to address the issue of high prices of the fuel in Parbhani.

The depot from where the Parbhani town gets oil is located in Solapur district.

The high petrol prices ahead of the Ganeshutsav, the biggest festival of Maharashtra, has come as a blow to various markets.

Apart from a 25% Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and 21% on diesel, the Maharashtra government has also introduced cess of Rs 9 and Rs 1 on petrol and diesel, respectively.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured that the government is looking at various proposals to provide relief to people.
