Raje’s occupation of bungalow triggers protest

Vasundhara Raje is currently occupying two bungalows, one allotted as the opposition leader where she is currently staying and other, 8 Civil Lines, the official residence of the chief minister.

Senior BJP leader Ghanshyam Tiwari and his workers of Deen Dayal Vahini on Thursday protested against Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje for not vacating her current bungalow, which is not her official residence.

The protest procession in Civil Lines was dispersed by police within few minutes.

Tiwari, a four-time rebel MLA, burnt the copies of the Rajasthan Ministers Salaries (Amendment) Bill, 2017, which was passed by the Raje government to take life-long possession of the bungalow in question.

Tiwari charged that the governor signed the controversial legislation to provide lifelong government bungalow and other facilities of a cabinet minister for ex-chief ministers as Kalyan Singh too was a beneficiary of a similar law in Uttar Pradesh that has now been scrapped by the Supreme Court.

The chief minister is currently occupying two bungalows, one allotted as the opposition leader where she is currently staying and other, 8 Civil Lines, the official residence of the chief minister.

Earlier, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot also shot a letter to the general administrative department and sought status over bungalow allowed to him in the Jaipur’s Civil Lines area.

What Bill says

The Vasundhara Raje government had brought in a law granting government accommodation to former chief ministers for life. The Rajasthan Ministers' Salaries (Amendment) Bill, 2017, was introduced and passed in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly during the Budget Session in April 2017.

As per the Bill, a former chief minister will continue to hold the possession of the bungalow even if he or she is appointed at any other position. Moreover, the bill makes them eligible for a car and a driver, a telephone and a staff of 10.

In case the facility is not availed by the former chief minister, the government will reimburse a fixed monthly amount.

However, the bill was opposed in the Assembly by the Opposition and within the BJP as well.
