A study by the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru has found that flaws in dam management was the cause for the 2018 floods in Kerala that claimed over 400 lives.

The report has come as an embarrassment to the LDF government in Kerala on the eve of the Assembly election. Congress leader Oommen Chandy said that the LDF government was morally responsible for the death of over 400 persons in the flood.

The report conducted for the Comptroller and Auditor General said that the flood cushion mechanism of the Idukki dam was not utilised and this led to the sudden water flow leading to the floods and calamities. The report also pointed out the lack of rain warning systems at the dams.

Earlier also there were reports that lapses in dam management caused the floods.
