A message on twitter by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramaniyan Swami on Wednesday generated speculations that he was informally offered the post of Jawaharlal Nehru University's vice chancellor which is set to turn vacant in January next year.

"Media is on fire that I have been offered the JNU VC post. No formal offer nor will there be if the Govt cannot meet my pre- conditions," he tweeted on the microblogging site.

This came after a section of media reported that Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani spoke to him two days back and offered the post of JNU VC, even as a search cum selection committee was yet to be set up for preparation of a list of suitable candidates for the post.

According to media reports, Swami told the HRD Minister that he would take up the responsibility of JNU VC only if he was a made a Rajya Sabha MP and given a Cabinet rank.

Swami did not respond to the phone calls made to seek his comment while the HRD Ministry remained tightlipped on the issue.

The BJP leader’s tweet, however, received a masive response with his followers reining in messages in his praise. "@Swamy39 People are jealous of you. It'd be a refreshing change to have you as the JNU VC. High time we get rid of these leftist," Swami's one of the followers posted in reply to his tweet. The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry recently begun search for a new vice chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as the five year term of Sudhir Kumar Sopory is set to expire by the end of this year.
