The newly appointed Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar and the party's chief ministerial candidate Sheila Dikshit on Sunday vowed to capture the politically crucial state in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Babbar and Dixit, who were accorded a rousing reception upon their arrival from Delhi, launched a scathing attack on the BJP and Samajwadi Party (SP), and expressed confidence that the Congress would stage a comeback in the state.

Without taking names, Babbar attacked the BJP national president Amit Shah and accused him of ''trying to strike deals'' with different smaller parties. He also took potshots at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that no one cheered his speeches in the country any more and so he travelled to foreign countries to get people to cheer him.

Sheila Dikshit, who sustained a minor injury when the platform from which she was acknowledging greetings of the party workers upon her arrival from Delhi collapsed, said that she planned to travel to every corner of the state to win the support of the electorate.

''Congress is the only alternative in UP...we will tell the people that UP has suffered a lot during the successive non-Congress regimes in the past 27 years,'' she said.
