The bitter tussle between the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi dispensation and Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari is not hidden from the public, with both directing jabs at each other openly.

The rift was recently heightened after the state government denied Koshiyari the permission to use a government-owned aircraft to travel to Dehradun.

Koshyari was scheduled to travel by a state government aircraft to Dehradun and after boarding the plane, the governor was informed that permission to use the plane had not been received. The governor later took a commercial flight from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to travel to the capital of his home state Uttarakhand.

The Maharashtra government maintained that the Raj Bhavan secretariat had been informed a day earlier by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) that approval for use of the official aircraft has not been given.

Here's all you need to know about the tussle

The relationship between Thackeray and Koshiyari goes back to October 2019. When the results of the Vidhan Sabha elections came out, they reflected a fractured mandate and subsequently, the Governor recommended President’s rule. Thackeray with his newly-formed alliance had gone to the governor seeking more time to form the government in the statewhich the governor had refused. In November 2019, Uddhav Thackeray was sworn-in as the chief minister.

Following this, various incidents started adding to their tussle. Amid increasing tensions between Kangana Ranaut and the state government in 2020, the governor had invited Kangana for talks, leaving Sena rattled. Thackeray had said, “inviting people who call Mumbai PoK with smiles does not fall into my definition of Hindutva.”

During the coronavirus lockdown, the two locked horns again on th issue of reopening of temples in Maharashtra. Koshiyari, in a letter, questioned whether Uddhav had ‘turned secular’ and requested him to reopen places of worship in Maharashtra with Covid precautions.

Uddhav Thackeray then slammed Koshiyari and said that his ‘Hindutva did not require any certificate’ from the Governor or anyone else.

Recently, the MVA government decided to move court over the delay by the governor in appointing nominated members to the Legislative Council. The state government recommended 12 names for the Council in the first week of November last year.
