As people in India’s financial capital showing laxity in wearing face masks during the Covid-19 pandemic, the government's message is clear: wear masks mandatorily as you wear helmets and seatbelts.

“If we fall short in wearing masks, the invisible enemy will attack. At times, he will even attack us through our friends and dear ones. Let me request you again. So, wearing masks is mandatory. Both, before and after being vaccinated,” says Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.

The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Police are cracking down against people who are seen without masks despite a recent spike in Covid-19 cases in some states.

Nearly 4,800 marshals have been deployed in Mumbai to check and fine people if they are not wearing masks and an additional 300 marshals are moving in suburban locals. The target is to fine 25,000 people daily for not using masks or wearing them improperly.

Wearing masks is compulsory and there is no other option, according to Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal and Police Commissioner Parambir Singh.

The Mumbai Police has been empowered to take action against unmasked citizens. They can also levy fines on violators.

“Mumbai Police is now authorised to issue challans to offenders not wearing a mask too. Every time we fined you for not wearing a helmet or seatbelt it was always to remind you the value of your life and safety. The same is for masks. Please take care. You matter to us,” Singh said.
