“One disadvantage is far less important than a number of advantages one’s blessed with.” - Lord Byron

You may know of the great English poet Lord Byron, whose birthday falls on January 22, was physically challenged. The club-foot Byron never cared for this congenital disability and went on to become one of the greatest English poets alongside his distinguished coevals P B Shelly and John Keats.

Rather than dwell upon his disability, he was far more conscious of the other fabulous qualities that nature had so generously bestowed upon him. He was devilishly handsome and was a poet par excellence. His disability was never an excuse!

The point here is that all of us are endowed with magnificent qualities and along with our positive qualities, there could be one or two disabilities or shortcomings. Should we keep harping upon what we’ve not had? Remember, disabilities don’t disable us.

Moreover, nature is never so ruthless as to make someone full of disabilities. When nature takes away something from an individual, it also endows that individual with greater and finer senses and abilities. Mind you, nature has a perfect sense of balance. German composer Ludwig van Beethoven had a visual and a hearing disability, but he went on to become one of the greatest composers of all time. Nature expiated him by giving him a heightened sense of touch and he used and internalised that while composing his immortal symphonies!

Like a snake, Beethoven could feel the notes and pianissimos through his skin! The short Napoleon Bonaparte (he was 4’-10’’) became the general of the French army and went on to become the emperor of France without ever using a gun to shoot anyone!

To encapsulate, nature never makes any individual or for that matter, anything incapable. We must focus on what we’ve got instead of cursing and condemning for what’s not been given to us. We must rejoice and feel blessed for whatever is at our disposal. That’s the essence of successful existence on earth.
