Paying that property tax

RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE
Last Updated 12 May 2009, 18:26 IST

Waiting in long queues to pay property tax was a great way to watch people and their various temperaments.
The Early Bird: He comes in much before the counter opens at 9:30 am, in fact in his morning walk attire and shoes, and smugly takes up position at the head of the queue.
The Take-No-Chances Type: Walks in, agitated, holding the plastic bag of a reputed retail outlet currently bursting with every conceivable document related to his property.
The Casual Stroller: He lethargically strolls in, surveys the scene apathetically and carries with him only the form, folded into a small square fitting neatly into the crease of his palm.
The Fixer: Walks in and heads purposefully to the Officer’s room where he engages in overt conversation to get his form expedited and out-of-queue.
The Queue Jumper: Tries to unobtrusively sidle up to the counter and assumes no one has noticed him. When questioned, he insists he has only one question to ask, and promises to leave immediately thereafter.
The Pen-Borrower: He has some last-minute writing on the form but just can’t seem to find his pen. So he borrows yours while you wait, impatient to make some additions yourself.
The Under-Confident One: Asks a hundred questions to reassure himself that he has correctly filled out his form and then also convinces you to cross-check it in the bargain.
The Angry Man: Stomps up to the counter every now and then to loudly and aggressively berate and question the person manning it as to the delay in accepting each form.
The Anarchist: Constantly takes pot-shots at the Government and loudly comments on its many areas of dysfunction, as manifest in this current tax-paying exercise, for instance.  Also loses no opportunity to extend his narrative of negative interactions to include the KEB, BWSSB, PWD and so on. Whoever said paying house tax was a painful task clearly didn’t see it for the keen chronicle of human behaviour that it could be!
