Plans afoot to setup Science City in Suttur

Suttur, a temple village on the banks of the River Kapila in Nanjangud taluk, 28-kms from the city, is all set to get a Science City, at a cost of Rs 191 crore, on the lines of the one in Kolkota. Mysuru, which already has numerous epithets, would add another feather in its cap, if the project becomes a reality. It would also attract tourists.

The State department of Science and Technology is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) and it would be executed in association with the Union government, on a 25 acre plot.

Jagadguru Sri Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Mutt, popularly known as Suttur Mutt, will provide lands and other infrastructure. Both the state and the Centre will share the funds required for the project, equally.

State Science and Technology Special Director (Technical) H Honnegowda said that the DPR will be submitted to the Union government and once it is approved, the works would begin. “The Science City would have an planetarium advanced than the Jawaharlal Planetarium in Bengaluru. There is already a similar planetarium in Mangaluru. An array of models will be on display,” he said.

He said that the Science City will become a hub for science activities in the region with exhibits on the growth of science, miracles of science, insights on researches, etc. Regularly, science related programmes will be held to create a science atmosphere among the students. It will also extend up to research and innovations, with sufficient laboratory facilities,” he added.
