‘Real independence is to provide social freedom to all’

Providing political, financial and social freedom to the last person in the strata of society is real independence, said District In-charge Minister K J George.

He was speaking during the 72nd Independence Day celebrations at the district playground on Wednesday. All sections of society should be provided with opportunities in terms of power and property. This is the main objective of the government, he said.

He further said that it is the bounden duty of everyone to recall the message given by Mahatma Gandhi at the premises of the DC’s office in Chikkamagaluru on August 18, 1927.

The sacrifices of freedom fighters Moulana Abul Kalam Azad, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Jhansi Rani Lakshmibai, Lala Lajpat Roy, Chandrashekhar Azad, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Sardar Vallabhbai Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Rajendra Prasad, Gopalakrishna Gokhale, Ambedkar, Kitturu Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna, who have freed the nation from the shackles of the British, must be remembered.

George further said that Chikkamagaluru is famous for tourist spots and religious destinations. The district has given major contributions to the literary world.

It has been decided to transplant crops in 1.50 lakh hectares during the monsoon season and 60% progress has been achieved by transplanting 90,000 hectares. Some parts of the district have received less rain. He also said that the decision of the state government to waive Rs 43,448 crore loans will help many farmers.

Under the ‘Hasiru Karnataka’ project declared in the budget, saplings will be planted in hillocks, gomala lands and around lakes, he said.

Jaladhara scheme has been launched by the government for a permanent solution to the drinking water problem in rural areas, he said and added that Karnataka is in the leading position in utilising modern technology in the administrative mechanism.
