JOIN USThough water level in Nethravathi and Kumaradhara rivers receded in Dakshina Kannada district, low-lying areas continued to remain underwater on Friday.
Around 50 houses at Uliya in Ullal have been marooned. The water has entered the courtyard of the houses of several people.
“The water started rising at 11 pm on Thursday. We kept all our belongings at an elevated place inside the house. The local youths have come to our help,” Prameela D’Souza, a resident, said. The Ullal CMC proposes to set up a gruel centre.
Meanwhile, a landslide occurred at Machina and affected arecanut plantations in the village. Also, the breaching of the streams has led to the inundation of arecanut plantations in the region.
Following landslide, the house of Ramesh Mudaladka is facing the threat of collapse. The Zilla Panchayat road has developed cracks in Macchina in Belthangady taluk.
District In-charge Minister U T Khader and DC Sasikanth Senthil visited the rain-affected areas at Sahasralingeshwara Temple, Halegate in Uppinangady, Goodinabali, Aladka, and Panemangaluru in Bantwal on Friday. Khader also inspected the landslide on Shiradi Ghat stretch till Marenahalli. Later, he visited Subrahmanya and Kulkunda Kuduremajalu Colony.
Khader said that as a precautionary measure, the movement of heavy vehicles multi-axle lorries and tankers are banned on Charmadi Ghat.
Though flood receded in Kumaradhara river at Subrahmanya, the Subrahmanya-Manjeshwara bridge continues to remain under water.
The residents of flood-affected Beedanagadde, Kulkunda Colony, Kuduremajali area in Subrahmanya have taken shelter at a gruel centre at Kulkunda. The Kukke Subrahmanya temple is supplying food to them. All the flood-affected people underwent a health checkup conducted by the doctors from Subrahmanya and Panja PHC. The landslide also occurred in Pushpagiri hilly range. Landslide continued near Gulikakana Colony near Kalmakar Estate, Manadu, Balugodu as well.
With the floodwater entering substation at Kumaradhara, the power supply has been affected at Subrahmanya, Harihara, Kollamogru, Kalmakaru, Balugodu, Ainakidu for the last two days.
As many as 539 people from 101 houses situated on the banks of River Nethravathi have been shifted to safer places. The villagers were shifted from Guddeangadi, Bhogodi, Aladka, Banglegudde and other places. The affected people have been provided shelter at Sri Sharada High School, Panemangalore, Old Inspection Bungalow, Bantwal Kasaba village and Zilla Panchayat School, Navoor. Only 152 people have taken shelter in these centres. The rest have taken shelter in their relatives’ houses.
The district recorded 95.6 of rainfall in the last 24 hours (ending 8.30am of Friday). Belthangady received the highest rainfall of 119.3 mm, followed by Puttur—117.8 mm, Sullia—100.8 mm, Bantwal—77.6 mm and Mangaluru—62.5 mm. Last year, the district had received 17.3 mm of rainfall in the corresponding period.
On Friday, the water level in the Nethravathi river at Bantwal was 9.5 metres above the danger level of 8.5 metres. The water level of the Nethravathi river at Uppinangady and Kumaradhara were 25.5 metres.
