The entry for very important persons at Motera cricket stadium, named the Sardar Patel Stadium, leads to an impressive atmosphere of soothing lightings, articulately made galleries, elegant white sofa, showcasing India’s cricketing history, its heroes and their achievements, including the maiden World Cup win in 1983 under Kapil Dev and in 2011 by the M S Dhoni-led team.
.
Above these landmark images of cricketing heroes, celebrating the victory, are pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, and his son Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI). There are not one or two such portraits but at least two dozens of them right above the pictures of Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, the group pictures of winning teams in world cups.
.
In a press note, the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) has stated, "The world's largest cricket stadium ...is the dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It was his idea as President of GCA & CM of Gujarat in 2014 to demolish the completely over 25 years old Motera stadium and build in its place a new one which would be the largest in the world with best of class facilities."
.
Along the “hall of fame” gallery, historical pictures are framed on the wall behind the shining glasses of almost every cricketer. In the melee of photos, images of PM Modi are displayed prominently, awarding prizes to the cricketers, waving hands towards the crowd (not visible), dressed in his immaculate style. “It was the idea of then chief minister Narendra Modi, who was a GCA president, to demolish the old stadium and build a new, state-of-the-art stadium. Besides, he is our prime minister and son of the soil.
.
That’s the reason his images have been displayed prominently. On the other hand, Amitbhai was our president till 2019 while his son is BCCI secretary,” said an official earlier associated with GCA on the condition of anonymity. The Motera stadium, claimed to be the biggest in the cricketing world, is set to host its first international match when India and England will clash in the day/night Test match from February 24. Incidentally, on the same day last year, the stadium had hosted former US President Donald Trump in an event named “Namaste Trump,” which nearly a lakh people attended.
.
Built at the cost of nearly Rs 800 crore, the stadium has a seating capacity of 1.10 lakh.
