Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj H K Patil on Thursday said that the government will increase the number of pure drinking water units to 2,000, from the present 1,000, across the State.

Speaking at a State-level consultative workshop on implications of climate change on water and sanitation organised jointly by the United Nations Children’s Fund and The Energy and Resources Institute, Patil said that the present scheme of 1,000 pure drinking water units may not suffice for the people in the State. Hence, the government was proposing to increase the number and ensure that there is at least one pure drinking water unit in the jurisdiction of every gram panchayat, he said.

Patil said that the government is also striving to create awareness about hygiene among rural population by constructing proper toilets and bathrooms.
