101 jumbos perish in a decade in Kodagu

The Western Ghats in Kodagu are a conducive habitat for pachyderms. However, more jumbo deaths have been reported from the region, according to statistics available with the
Forest department.
Of the total jumbo deaths, 11 have been due to gun shots and 13 electrocuted. The rest of the deaths have been attributed to old age or ill health. The reason for the death of a jumbo in 2008 is yet to be ascertained. Two each elephants have died in Somawarpet, Shanivara Santhe and Kushalnagar ranges in the last one year.
Man-animal conflict too has been on the rise in the district. As many as 3,384 incidents of jumbo attack have been registered in the last ten years and 33 people have died in the last five years. 
The State government is yet to act on the proposal of the district administration.
