The district administration “acted immediately” to check the violation of the model code of conduct by the Congress party in Belagavi on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner N Jayaram has said.
At its convention that was addressed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the Congress party had served food to members of taluk and gram panchayats who are voters in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections from the local bodies’ constituency.
Jayaram, who is the Returning Officer for the elections, insisted that the matter was brought to his notice at 12.45 pm and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered 15 minutes later.
Tahsildar Preetam Naslapure stopped the distribution of food and seized it immediately.
Jayaram denied that he was unaware of the food distribution at the election campaign meeting and stressed that immediate action was taken as per law.
Police are investigating the case and necessary action would be taken against the violators, he added.
