BJP walks out over Council chairman polls

The Opposition BJP in the Legislative Council staged a walkout on Tuesday after the government refused to announce the dates for the Chairman election.

Reminding the government that it had assured the House to conduct the election to the post, before the conclusion of the ongoing budget session, BJP member Ayanur Manjunath said that the government’s failure to keep its word would amount to breach of privilege.

Pro tem chairman, JD(S) MLC Basavaraj Horatti has been carrying out the proceedings of the House, ever since the ongoing legislature session was convened on July 2.

Last Friday, the BJP had stalled the proceedings of the House questioning the legal sanctity of the jurisdiction of the pro tem chairman.

At that time, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Krishna Byre Gowda had said that the Chairman election would be held before the prorogation of the session.

On Tuesday too, Gowda maintained the same. He clarified that the ongoing session would be adjourned ‘sine die’. As the session would not be prorogued, the elections can be held before the completion of the next session, he added.

The BJP members, however, argued that during the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, the ruling party members had assured that the elections would be held before July 12.

When the BJP members took a dig at Gowda for not respecting the rules and procedures of the House, the minister attacked the saffron party members for not respecting the Constitution.

“You don’t even respect the Constitution -- you want it to be amended,” he said.

At this stage, the BJP members raised slogans against the government and walked out of the House.
