A class eight student was allegedly gangraped by three men near Nelogal in Haveri district, late on Tuesday night.

The parents of the girl have alleged that the police failed to register a case initially and did so only after a direction by the Dharwad Superintendent of Police to this effect.

The girl, a native of Budarasingi village in Hubli taluk, had been to her grandmother’s house at Hirenarti in Kundagol taluk of Dharwad district.

The suspects Parashuram Basavanneppa Magadi, 25, Manohar Bheemappa Ranoji, 40, and Nagappa Ranoji, 38, all from Hireharakuni, followed the girl when she was on her way to the open toilet to answer nature’s call.

They tied her mouth with a cloth, dragged her into a car, took her to a farm in Nelogal village and raped her, the girl’s father Siddaramappa said in his complaint to the police.
