The ruling Congress has to consolidate secular votes by joining hands with like-minded parties to defeat the BJP in the Assembly elections, a report by the Communist Party of India has stated.

The CPI's Political Review Report was adopted at the party's recent convention in Davangere. In the report, the CPI has warned the Congress that it should brace for a debacle in the upcoming election owing to various problems dogging the party from within.

The BJP has a clear edge in terms of grassroots presence, a dedicated party cadre and connect with youngsters, it states. On the JD(S), the report states that the party will emerge, at best, as a kingmaker.
