JD(S) bags Kolar ZP President post

Infighting hits Congress
Last Updated 13 May 2009, 18:05 IST

The JD(S) with only seven members in the 28-member Zilla Panchayat was able to win the president’s post with its member M Srinivasapur from Gownpalli constituency in Srinivasapur taluk being elected. Former Congress legislator K Srinviasgowda faction’s Navida Khanum from Betamangala constituency in Bangarpet taluk was elected as Vice President for the third time.

Votes in favour

The president and vice president got 16 votes each in their favour, while M Naryanaswamy and B N Kokila of Union Minister K H Muniyappa faction managed to get only 11 votes each.

In the light of the HIgh Court order Congress’ Krishnappa from Avani constituency in Mulbagal taluk did not have the right to vote.

Since the last four to five days there was hectic activity in the two factions of the Congress and the JD(S).

In reality though the K H Muniyappa faction had 14 members, three members who were unhappy with the decision of making Ramachandrappa of that party as the president, switched over to the K Srinivasagowda faction at the last minute. Hence though the Congress had a majority it was deprived of power. Bangalore Regional Commissioner G M Dhananjay was the returning officer.
