He spoke after reading his poems, ‘Elliddare Bendre?’ and Ondu Tarageleya Gorigeetha’ at the ‘Kavi Odu’ programme organised on Wednesday by the Nudi Mantapa Vedike of the Kannada Post-graduation Department at the Government Boys’ College of Kolar.

Individual vs social

“The district is recognised today as only the birthplace of great men like D V Gundappa and Masti Venkatesh Iyengar. No efforts were made so far to combine the individuality of the district with the entire Kannada culture,” said Ramaiah.

It is time to recognise Kolar district through cultural and social ways instead of individuals. The district will also gain such a position within the next 10-15 years. The youth should prepare for this achievement.

Relating to poetry

Ramaiah spoke on poetry as something to be experienced. “This is the only means to understand poetry. No matter how much one might try to explain it, it can never compete with the experience of the listener or the reader,” he said.

He stressed on the point saying, “There is therefore nothing that I can say about my own pieces of poetry!”

Breaking conventions

The head of the Kannada Post-graduation Department, C A Ramesh said, “We can see that poetry is moving towards and taking a keen interest in breaking the old traditions and building new ones.”

Students who attended the programme also gave their opinions. Later, a discussion was conducted on Kum. Veerabhadrappa’s autobiography ‘Gandhi Claasu’.

Lecturers Sangeetha, Rudresh Adarangi, Muniraju, Muniyappa and several students were present.
