The police had stationed the vehicle in front of BEML Officers’ Quarters in BEML Nagar. A sub-inspector from BEML police station was assessing the speed of the vehicles through the interceptor and those driving their vehicles faster than 40 kmph speed were asked to pullover. The police then slapped fines on the violators.

But most of the violators were students as there are many colleges in the vicinity. The students were seen pleading the police to let them go since they could not afford to pay thefines.

Plainclothes men accompanied students, who failed to pay the fine, home.

The public objected to the treatment meted out to the students by the police. They said there were no indicators on the BEML Nagar double road that pointed out the speed limit.

Officers from BEML, who are responsible for maintaining the road, also said that there was no speed limit set on the stretch.

“If a speed limit has to be set on the road, that has to be done by the Public Works Department,” they added.

Given this, the police action came in for a lot of criticism from the public.
