Coast Guard Commandant and Operations Officer Rajender Singh Sapal told reporters here on Tuesday that the Assistant Director of Fisheries Department in Vypeen at Kochi  informed them at 5.35 pm about the trawler, ‘Diamond’  in distress.

‘Diamond,’ owned by Suhaib of Kochi and sailed out from Ernakulam on August 2, was anchored about 4.3 nautical miles off the Coast of Thannirbavi here.

The Coast Guard immediately sent its ship, ‘Kasturba Gandhi’ under the command of Commandant R K Sharma, he added.

“Despite rough sea and heavy rain, the Coast Guard ship crew braved the high seas to rescue the fishermen,” he said. They located the trawler at 7.50 pm, towed it to the New Mangalore Port and handed over to the Coastal Security Police (CSP) after preliminary investigation.

The trawler along with the crew were handed over to the Coastal Security Police (CSP) after preliminary investigation. The CSP will make arrangements to hand over the trawler to the owner.

Fishermen Vinu (29), Shibu (28), Anjaney (43), Gilbert (33), R Johny (39), Jeenis (18) and Anis (20) are safe.

Boat missing

A trawler, named ‘Bhadrakali’, which went for deep fishing four days ago is yet to return. All efforts to reach them have gone futile.

An official at the Department of Fisheries said lookout for six to eight fishermen in the trawler was on.

A body of another fisherman who went fishing along with three others in the trawler, ‘Mahalatha’  was retrieved on Tuesday morning. Jesu Kumar’s body was found while Kalanjamas is yet to be traced.
