Heavy rain pummels Bellary, Kolar dists

Lightning kills three in Coastal, North Karnataka; wall collapse claims mans life in Honnali

Heavy rain accompanied by lightning has claimed four lives in the State since Saturday night.

Bellary city recorded a rainfall of 100 mm on Saturday night.  Showers accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning pounded Bellary for three hours from 11 pm. Rainwater gushed into hundreds of low-lying areas of the City.

 Kudligi taluk received 43 mm of rainfall. rainwater gushed into more than 50 houses in Chandrashekharapura village of Ramadurga Gram Panchayat. Household articles and clothes were washed away by the rainwater.

Water entered the village as a canal constructed on the outskirts of the village to drain the rainwater from the areas at a higher elevation had choked.

People struggled for a shelter as several houses and even the building housing Government Higher Primary School were flooded. The residents alleged that except the village accountant who visited the village in the morning, none of the government officials turned up till evening.

However, Taluk Panchayat executive officer along with a few staff members visited the village late in the evening following the directions from Manjunath Nayak, Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat. 

The villages Haraginadoni, Belagal, Belagal Tanda, Jaanekunte, Honnalli, Mincheri, Kollagallu, Sridharagudda, Lakshmisagara Camp, Kurugodu, Koluru, Emmiganuru, Orvaayi and Guthiganuru in Bellary taluk received heavy rainfall. Rain also lashed Serigeri in Siruguppa taluk. Two houses were partially damaged in Nelludi village.
Sandur, Siruguppa, Hospet and other regions in the district received rain for over two hours on Saturday.

Kolar

Heavy rain, accompanied by lightning and thunder, battered Kolar throughout Saturday night.

Roads were virtually submerged under water as clogged stormwater drains overflowed. Traffic at several parts of the City had come to a grinding halt. Waterlogging was reported from several residential areas. rainwater gushed into PWD quarters and a government school.

Coastal districts

Parts of coastal districts too received rain on Saturday night. There have been reports of minor damages due to rain and lightning.

Babu (60), was struck dead by lightning near Surathkal. Gerald Veigas (38), a lineman who was on the job to repair a faulty line was electrocuted when he came in contact with a live wire near Vamanjur, close to Mangalore. Power supply in the area was affected due to rain.

Wall collapse

A man was killed in a wall collapse in Belimallur village of Honnali taluk in Davangere district on Sunday. Rangappa (35) is the dead. Incessant rain had dampened the wall of the house. Three houses have collapsed in Honnali taluk over the last two days. Lightning damaged a house partially in Channapatna village of Holalkere taluk, Chitradurga district.

North Karnataka

Two persons were struck dead by lightning in Bijapur district. Sunanda Hanumantharaya Kenchagondara (30) was killed while she was working in a field in Hullur village of Muddebihal taluk on Sunday. Siddappa Bheemanna Yamagara (55) was killed by lightning in Chikkamannur village of Indi taluk on Saturday night.
