Heavy rainfall batters Kodagu district

Heavy rains lashed Kodagu and parts of Belagavi district on Wednesday.Normal life was affected in Madikeri of Kodagu district due to torrential rains.

 While it rained heavily in Madikeri and surrounding areas, moderate showers were reported from Talacauvery, Bhagamandala and Napoklu. Five houses were damaged in Nagammanameti village following the collapse of compound wall.

 Kootu stream, one the major source of drinking water to Kodagu district, is full to the brim. The water level in Harangi reservoir has reached 2,848 feet against the maximum of 2,859 feet. 

In the last 24 hours, (till 8.30 am on Wednesday), Kodagu district recorded an average rainfall of 12.81 mm.

Western parts of Khanapur taluk in Belagavi district continued to receive heavy rains, while rains receded in Khanapur town and Belagavi taluk. There was intermittent rain in Dharwad.

Hampi and surrounding areas in Ballari district received brisk rains for about 30 minutes in the noon. Tourists had a tough time as water had accumulated in the Hampi ruins. Visitors had to wade through water for reaching Virupkasha temple. 

Though rains have receded in the catchment areas, the water level in the Tungabhadra reservoir (Hosapete) went up by three tmc feet. According to dam authorities, release of water from Gajanur damin Shivamogga district has been pushing up levels in the Tungabhadra dam. There was only a drizzle in Shivamogga.

Mysuru city and surrounding areas experienced light to moderate showers. Hassan, Mandya and Chamarajanagar remained cloudy throughout the day with intermittent drizzles. 

However, the inflow into KRS dam went up due to heavy rains in Kodagu region. The water level in the dam stood at 88.80 ft on Wednesday. Hemavathy dam had 2,884 feet of water against the maximum of 2,922 feet. The water level in Kabini dam was 2263.7 feet against maximum of 2,284 ft.
