A total of 12 dengue cases have been confirmed in the district from January to June 5. All have been treated and cured, said DHO In-charge Dr Shivakumar.

Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, he said that 133 suspected dengue cases were reported in the district. All the blood samples were sent to the laboratory and 12 were confirmed. The blood samples of 69 suspected chikungunya cases were also sent to laboratory, but no case has been confirmed, he added.

An Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight will be held in the district from June 12 to 24. Children below five years of age suffer from diarrhoea. The Health Department is organising a drive to control such cases, said the health officer.

District RCHO Dr Nilesh said the programme is aimed at preventing diarrhoeal deaths which is one of the most common causes of death among children. Oral rehydration solution (ORS) will help in checking diarrhoea and zinc tablets will help in checking the death. Asha workers will distribute oral rehydration solution packets to each household that has children aged below five. In addition, they will also demonstrate the use of ORS. Health workers will also visit villages. The zinc tablet will also give strength to the child, he added.

Dr Nilesh said that 245 ORS and zinc tablet distribution centres will be opened in the district.
