JOIN USSuperintendent of Police S D Sharanappa said, in view of increasing cases of online frauds, the Dakshina Kannada police are planning to conduct an awareness drive in schools and colleges shortly, as to reach out to their parents as well.
Speaking to reporters here on Friday, he said, “In one of the cases of online fraud, a youth from Dakshina Kannada lost Rs 20 lakh. The youth had received an SMS in November 2014, stating that he had won Rs one crore from Punjab State Lottery.Initially, he was asked to deposit a sum of Rs 10,000 to a particular bank account. Later, the fraudsters continued to receive money in the name of tax, RBI guidelines, etc.
“Inspite of police warnings against online frauds, public have been falling prey to it. The public have been asked not to entertain emails, calls and messages asking for ATM pin number and other details. No bank details should be furnished to the callers and such calls or messages should be ignored. While carrying out online transactions, one should ensure that the bank website is genuine and starts with https://. People should be extra cautious while carrying out online shopping,” Sharanappa explained.
With a view to create awareness about online frauds, a poster will be put up at all police stations. The public should be cautious with regard to job related frauds as well, the SP informed.
