'Donors to construct 4,000 houses in flood-hit areas'

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of the inauguration of 100 mini hydro electricity units in Madenadu, he said the project to construct 500 houses in Kongavada in Dharwad district will be flagged off next month. Remaining 500 houses will be constructed at the sites given by the government. Donors have assured to construct 4,000 houses.

“Everything has been washed away in North Karnataka. There is severe shortage of drinking water. Moreover, collecting raw materials like tiles, stone, sand, water for the construction of house is a big challenge to us,” he added.

 A total of 5,000 houses will be constructed. Government has given free hand to SKDRDP to construct houses, he informed.  

On an experimental basis, SKDRDP has started mini hydro electricity units in the water which gushes from hillocks. One unit costs Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000. With this unit, the electricity is being supplied to the neighbouring houses.

 A sum of Rs 13 lakh has been utilised for the project. Beneficiaries have been given financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh.

At the same time mass hydro electricity units are being installed at Kaloor in Galibeedu Gram Panchayat limits at an estimated cost of Rs 9 lakh. With this electricity will be supplied to 50 houses. Electricity is being supplied to 50 houses near Umbadi in Chembu, Heggade informed.

Assembly Deputy Speaker K G Bopaiah, Zilla Panchayat President V M Vijaya, Taluk Panchayat President H S Subhashini and others were present.
