Speaking to Deccan Herald, DREU Zonal Assistant General Secretary Haridasan said that there are as many as 2.5 lakh vacancies in different railway departments all over India. In Mangalore itself, there is a severe shortage of railway staff and the existing staff has to over work to complete the work in time, he said.

He also complained about the pathetic condition of the railway quarters. “The roofs are leaking and the doors are broken. The trees outside the quarters are bent low and may fall on the quarters in case of heavy rains. Drainages are blocked causing heavy breeding of mosquitoes. There are about 395 Railway quarters and all are in the same condition,” he regretted. The employees put forth their other demands in the protest such as restroom to all department staff, inter divisional one way transfer to be ordered immediately on the basis of seniority, employees to be allotted for night patrol and several others. DREU Secretary P V Lakshman warned of an indefinite hunger strike in case the authorities fail to fulfill the demands.
