Sports schools are need of the hour: VC

 Sports have an important place in the academic curriculum, and it plays an important role in shaping model citizens, said Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankaramurthy. He was addressing the home guards, after inaugurating the Western Range Home Guards sports meet in Mangalore on Tuesday.

“One of the commissions on education, appointed by the Central government, had proposed starting sports schools and colleges all over the country. This underlines the importance of sports in education. Education is not merely acquiring knowledge from the books, but a positive mental and physical and intellectual growth,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor said the home guards, which constitute the second line of defence in the district, is a special force, which consists of people, who have their own individual profession as well as a profession which serves their country. “The job of home guards is very difficult. Organising sports meet like this will give them a break from their busy schedule and help them to enjoy,” he said.

Mangalore City Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime and Traffic) Dharmaiah was the chief guest during the inaugural function.

Home Guards Commandant Nidarsh Hegde, Deputy Commandant Purushotham were also present during the function.

More than 50 home guards from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur and Uttara Kannada are participating in the two-day meet.
Deputy Commandant Purushotham received the guard of honour from the athletes.
