BJP worker Praveen Poojary was murdered in retaliation for a stone-throwing incident at a prayer hall during the torchlight procession organised by the Hindu Jagrana Vedike in Kushalnagar, Inspector General of Police (Southern Range), B K Singh, has said.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, the IGP said that Poojary had participated in the procession taken out on the night of August 14 and was murdered while on way home. “The men arrested in connection with the murder suspected that Muslims were abused during the procession and decided to hit back,” he said.  The Kodagu police have taken five of the eight suspects into their custody for questioning.
