Kolar, CB Pur to get unused treated water from city's STPs

Treated wastewater from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in the city, which usually goes down the drain, will be supplied to industries and waterbodies in Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts.

About 8 tmcft of treated water from the Koramangala STP will be sent to the two districts, according to the state budget for 2017-18. The project will be executed by the Minor Irrigation Department which will lay the pipelines needed to pump out the water to the two districts. The entire cost of the project will be borne by that department, according to an official in the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB).

The BWSSB operates 14 STPs with a total capacity of 721 MLD but most of the treated water is not utilised because of a poor network.

“The treated water from the Koramanagala STP will be diverted to lakes, industries and other points in Kolar and Chikkaballapur. We aim to utilise 100% of the treated water from various STPs in the coming years,” said BWSSB Chief Engineer (Wastewater Management), Ramakrishna S M. This apart, slum dwellers living in houses built on 30x20 feet sites will get 10,000 litres of free water every month. Their water charges will be waived. BWSSB officials said a meeting would be held shortly to chalk out the nitty-gritty of the scheme.
