Fuel price hike: Taxi drivers stage protest

Members of taxi drivers associations staged a protest in Madikeri on Friday.

Opposing hike in fuel prices, illegal services by whiteboard vehicles and rental bikes, the taxi drivers took out a protest rally from Mangerira Muttanna Circle to the DC’s office.

The protesters raised slogans against the government on the occasion.

Madikeri Taxi Drivers’ and Owners’ Association president Tekkade Santu Cariappa said that the common people are fed up with the hike in the prices of fuel and daily commodities.

Taxi drivers have been facing the adverse effects of the hike in the prices of fuel. Moreover, they are not getting passengers. The price of spare parts has also risen, he added.

The movement of whiteboard vehicles and rental bikes should be banned as they have affected taxi drivers’ livelihood, he said.

A memorandum was submitted to Additional Deputy Commissioner Roopa.

Taxi Drivers’ Association secretary Arasu, Kaveri Car Drivers’ and Owners’ Association president Jaya Jagadish, secretary Kuyyamudi Rajesh, Coffeenadu Pravasi Caru Maleekara Hagu Chalakara Sangha president Rajesh, secretary Sonal, leaders Swamy and Pramod took part in the protest.
