Modi may lay foundation stone for IIT-Dharwad

Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi has said that the work on the construction of the main campus of Indian Institute of Technology-Dharwad (IIT-DH) has been expedited.

The campus is coming up near Mummigatti at an area of 466 acres. Presently the IIT is functioning from the transit campus at Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) since 2016 June.

Joshi, joined by MLAs Arvind Bellad and Amrut Desai, viewed the blueprint of the new campus at WALMI campus on Friday.

“The cost estimate for the construction of the new campus is pegged at Rs 3,000 crore and the work will be completed in three phases,” Joshi said.

The Rs 1,200-crore first phase will cover the construction of the main building. Joshi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi would lay the foundation stone for the new campus during the first week of January 2019. “We will finalise the date of the event after taking into account the schedule of the prime minister.”

IIT-Dharwad campus will be an eco-friendly and green campus. Construction of the campus will be without felling a single tree and at the same time without compromising on the master plan of the campus, said an officer.

The land set aside for new campus has more than 4,800 trees and frequented by langurs, rabbits and other animals. The new campus also has 66 acres of forest in its vicinity.
