Last Updated 16 December 2018, 16:37 IST

Researchers have chanced upon an ancient water supply pipeline system at the kalyani (temple pond) discovered on the premises of the Virupaksha temple at Hampi.

The temple pond had been discovered during excavation on July 8. The renovation work undertaken later brought to light the pipeline system in the temple pond, which has beautiful carvings on its walls.

The pipeline system, though, is dilapidated due to lack of maintenance.

The other side of the temple pond has steps to climb down into it. Many figurines, including those of Vishnu and Varahi, were found. The inscription ‘Prabhateertham’ in Telugu was also found.

The Archaeological Survey of India has decided to take the help of GPS technology for a thorough research of the temple pond area. They plan to create a map of the structure so as to develop it as per its original form.
