Sampaje Ghat opens for light vehicles

Last Updated 25 October 2018, 11:56 IST

After a month of the closure of the Mani-Mysuru (Sampaje Ghat road NH 275), light vehicles were allowed on the stretch from Wednesday.

Multiple landslides at Madenadu on the stretch, on August 12, had affected the road connectivity between Madikeri and Mangaluru. With the temporary repair of the stretch, cars and two-wheelers are allowed on the stretch. A major landslide occurred at Jodupala on Sampaje Ghat Road on August 17. It may take a few more days for buses to operate on the stretch.

National Highway (NH) Mangaluru division assistant executive engineer Nagaraj said that the work on the stretch was in progress. All efforts were being made to facilitate the movement of heavy vehicles at the earliest.

The rain and landslides on multiple locations had taken a toll on nearly 7 km of the stretch. A new road is being laid on the stretch, wherever it has been fully damaged. The damaged road has been repaired using a concrete mix. As many as 50 workers, along with technical experts, are working to repair the stretch, he said.

After the closure of the road, KSRTC started operating mini buses to Madikeri via Sullia-Kallapalli-Panathooru-Karike-Bhagamandala from August 23. With the opening of the Sampaje Ghat road for light vehicles, the density of vehicles on Sullia-Karike-Bhagamandala road will reduce.
