Centre's nod sought to build reservoirs at Mekedatu

Last Updated 08 August 2018, 17:51 IST

Karnataka on Wednesday sought permission from the Centre to construct balancing reservoirs at Mekedatu on River Cauvery.

Karnataka Water Resources Minister D K Shivakumar met Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari and requested that if the project comes up, it would help in storing excess water from the Cauvery.

The project would not obstruct Tamil Nadu getting its share of water from the Cauvery, Shivakumar said.

Instead of flowing excess water to sea, it can be stored at balancing reservoir and utilised by both the states, he said.

He also sought Rs 4,450 crore for renovating the crest gates of Narayanpura, Kadra and Ghataprabha reservoirs.
