ULB polls: Mixed bag for Cong, BJP in Kalaburagi

Congress trounced opponents in four of the seven Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections in Kalaburagi district.

A total of seven ULBs—six Town Municipal Councils (TMCs)—Aland, Afzalpur, Jewargi, Chittapur, Sedam and Chincholi and one City Municipal Council (CMC)-Shahbad went to polls on August 31.

In the counting held on Monday, results for a total of 169 seats, were announced for 168. It may be recalled that all nominations in Afzalpur’s ward no 19 were rejected.

Congress bagged 90 seats, followed by BJP (63), JD(S) -six, BSP-one and Independents -eight.

Congress has a clear majority in four ULBs—Shahbad CMC, Chittapur TMC, Afzalpur TMC and Chincholi TMC. BJP has a clear majority in two ULBs—Sedam TMC and Jewargi TMC.

However, in Aland, both the national parties bagged 13 seats each.

Congress is tipped to assume power with the support of JD(S) which has one seat. JD(S) is the Congress' coalition partner in the current state government also.

In all, JD(S) won 6 seats in the Kalburagi district. It won three seats in Jewargi- which was the highest it could manage.

BSP won one seat in Chincholi, while it failed everywhere else.

As many as eight Independents were elected. While four were elected from Chincholi TMC, three won in Shahbad CMC and one in Afzalpur TMC.
