Google AI Mode gets PDF reader, Canvas and more

Google earlier this month launched the generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI)-based AI Mode in its Search app on Android and iOS platforms in India.

Now, it has introduced several new tools to further enhance the user experience on the Google Search app.

Once updated to the latest version, users will be able to upload PDFs and use Google AI Mode to read the entire document to offer an easy-to-read summary and key pointers.

This can greatly help students study a science topic. Beyond PDF, they can deep dive for more information. Google AI Mode can fetch genuine information from reliable science websites from around the world.

Another new feature is the Canvas. With this, users can chalk out their plan of action for the week or the month. It can be helpful to students and corporate employees to focus on their projects.

For instance, a student can just say 'Create a Canvas' on the Search tab with Google AI Mode on. It instantly creates side panels, and users can customise the study guide with context from the files, such as class notes or a course syllabus.

Another notable feature is Search Live with video input. It brings advanced capabilities from Project Astra directly into AI Mode.

For the uninitiated, Project Astra runs on Google's most advanced speech models to be able to understand and have long conversations with device owners to perform multiple tasks with less time.

For instance, if you show a complex maths problem on a notepad, it can instantly solve the equation with a step-by-step guide.

To get started, the user has to just open Lens in the Google app, tap the Live icon, and ask whatever’s on their mind while pointing the camera. Users can have a free-flowing, back-and-forth conversation with Search in AI Mode, aided by all the visual context from the live camera feed, like different angles or objects in motion.

All the new features of AI Mode on Google Search are being deployed with an update to the app. Initially, it will be available in the US by this weekend. Later, they will be released in other global regions, including India, in the coming weeks.
