Xiaomi partners DBG, BYD to boost local phone assembling in India

Xiaomi on Thursday (February 25) marked the fifth anniversary of its 'Make in India' initiative with the announcement of collaboration with twi new OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) DBG and BYD in India.

Xiaomi's new partner-- DBG has set up a smartphone manufacturing plant in Haryana, while BYD is setting up a plant in Tamil Nadu.

DBG's unit is already commenced operations and is said to boost Xiaomi's monthly phone production by 20 percent in India. BYD India is also expected to contribute significantly to the production capacity once its operations begin by H1 of 2021.

With these two additions, Xiaomi has a total of five plants operated by Foxconn (2), Flex (1) spread across Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Haryana. And, Xiaomi added that 99 percent of all the phones sold in India are assembled locally.

“2020 was an exceptional year, the pandemic led to multiple challenges disrupting the entire global and India supply chain. Despite this, the Mi India team worked together to further expand our local supply chain and manufacturing capability. It is due to our continued expansion of our local production that today, we continue to maintain our leadership in the smartphone and smart TV market space and emerged as the most trusted smartphone brand," said Manu Kumar Jain, MD, Mi India .

Xiaomi said that the majority of the components used in phones such as PCBA (mother-board), sub board, camera module, battery, back panel, USB cable, chargers, boxes and many more are either locally sourced or manufactured by Sunny India, NVT, Salcomp, LY Tech, Sunvoda in India.

All these components contribute to more than 75% of the value of the smartphone.

Also, Xiaomi is collaborating with the new partner Radiant Technology - for manufacturing smart TVs in India. The latter has set up a manufacturing plant in Telangana. All the Mi TV series sold in India are 100 percent locally assembled.

And, the company says it now employs more than 60,000 people in India, 10,000 more than previous year.

As per the latest reports, Xiaomi leads both smartphone and smart TV business in India.
