Last Updated 06 August 2018, 18:06 IST

The environmentalists prevented the felling of a tree in Lady Hill, and the MCC translocated the tree to a vacant land on Monday.

The 20-year-old tree provided shade to the people and auto-rickshaw drivers, at Lady Hill Circle. The authorities had given permission for felling of the tree, to facilitate the road work.

In fact, the authorities had attempted to fell the tree two months ago, which was thwarted by the environmentalists.

Using an earth mover, the area was dug and the tree was translocated after chopping its branches. The tree was planted in a vacant land nearby.

The process of translocating the tree began at 10 am and continued till 2 pm. Environmentalist Shashidhar Shetty, Jeeth Milan Roche were present on the occasion. The City Corporation contractor also promised to water the translocated tree.

Shashidhar Shetty of National Environment Care Federation said, “We will not allow felling of trees in the MCC jurisdiction. In case of necessity, the MCC should translocate the trees and plant it. Why else does the local body collects green cess,” he asked.

Jeeth Milan Roche said, “With little effort, fully grown trees can be saved from felling. If the authorities continue to fell trees, what will happen to the city?” he asked.
