Admission quota in pvt institutes flayed

A day after the HRD ministry decided to enforce reservation in private higher education institution, a prominent body of the self-financed universities and colleges called the move as “premature,” and whether the government will “compensate” the private institutions with the cost to be incurred on the implementation of quota.

While speaking to the DH, Education Promotion Society of India (EPSI) executive secretary P Palanivel, however, refrained from commenting on the merit of the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry’s decision to enforce quota in admission of all category of students in private higher education institutions from the academic session, beginning 2019.

He said the EPSI can comment on the merit of the ministry’s decision only after it gets the details about it.

“We do not know how are they going to do it. It’s premature. We need to have details before we express our views on the ministry’s decision. But, the fundamental question is whether they will be compensating the private institutions if reservation in admission is implemented?” Palanivel said. To buttress his point that there should be a provision for compensating the private institutions for implementation of quota in admission, he said “many of the institutions” were operating under “heavy burden of loan.”

“The government can surely implement its decision in the public-funded institutions. But, to implement quota in private institutions, a provision for payment of compensation by the government should be there,” he said

While announcing the ministry’s decision on Tuesday, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters that his ministry had reached out to the private higher education institutions for implementation of quota and that they were “ready” to implement it. When asked, Palanivel said that the EPSI had “no clue” about the move.
