Students create awareness on ‘No Horn Day’

Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath has initiated a ‘No Horn Day’, in Mangaluru on every Wednesday.

The move has been taken to prevent health hazards from noise pollution and to check the use of harsh horns by vehicles.

As a part of the campaign, students from various colleges and citizens created awareness among bus drivers and auto rickshaw drivers at Ambedkar Circle and other areas in the city. The students displayed placards with ‘No Horn Day’ signs and handed over roses to the drivers to support the initiative on Wednesday.

Vedavyas Kamath has posted on his Facebook page, “No Horn Wednesday. Honk free Kudla. After social media, radio, TV and print media, now started with real presence in traffic. Keep supporting the initiative. #NoHornDay # HonkFreeWednesday # NoiseFreeKudla. Lets make Mangaluru, the first South Indian city to get the tag “Honk free city.”

The legislator’s social media message was posted a month ago. It has received good response from the public, who have supported the initiative.

Dilraj Alva, Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators’ Association president, said that the ‘No Horn Day’, is a good initiative and the association will support it.

The authorities passed a notification in 1993 on a honk-free area from Hampankatta to Clock Tower and in 2000 from Attavara to Milagres Circle. The notification, however, had not been implemented effectively.
