Five persons, including two women, have been arrested for extortion after threatening people of getting them arrested in fake cases of rape.

The three men claimed to be Delhi Police officers and were held while demanding Rs 50,000 from a priest in west Delhi, police said on Thursday.

The accused have been identified as Sanjeev, 34, Charanjit Singh, 48, Surender Singh, 44, Renu Jha, 55, and Paramjit Kaur, 48.

Police said a probe was initiated after priest Govind Ram Sharma approached Khayala police station on Tuesday.

Govind had received a missed call on his mobile phone from an unidentified number. On this, he called on the number and a woman responded.

“The woman told Govind that she wanted to meet him for some queries and that the call was made to ensure his presence at the temple,” said Ranvir Singh, Additional Commissioner of Police (West).

Soon, Renu and Parmjit went to the temple with Sanjeev, Charanjit and Surender and the men introduced themselves as Delhi Police officers.

They were in civil clothes, but one of them was holding a file cover of Delhi Police. The women claimed that they had been raped by Govind on which he got scared.

“The three men, however, claimed that the issue could be solved if Govind made a payment of Rs 50,000,” Singh added. Govind told them that he only had Rs 5,000, but they were adamant that the issue will be resolved only after receipt of Rs 50,000.Govind gave them Rs 5,000 and in return got around two hours for payment of the remaining amount.

But the priest was unable to manage the money and finding no other option, he decided to narrate the incident to the management committee of the temple. When Govind received another call informing that the gang was coming to get the balance amount, he informed local police.

Accordingly, a trap was laid with the help of the management committee of temple. Around 11 am on Tuesday, two persons came to the temple on a moped.

“One of the person was carrying the folder of Delhi Police. Both were apprehended,” Singh said.

They were identified as Sanjeev and Charanjit. On questioning, it was found that they were not employed with Delhi Police. At their instance, three others were caught.
