Extending the reach of its work in community medicine, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences plans to open a centre in Fatehpur Biloch village in Faridabad.

Apart from treating people from over 20 villages, the centre will train doctors, paramedical staff, nurses and other health professionals.

The centre will be opened under the guidance of AIIMS’ community medicine department.

The department already manages a 60-bed hospital in the comprehensive rural health centre at Ballabhgarh in Haryana. It provides health cover to about 2.5 lakh people.

Head of community medicine department Dr C S Pandav said the panchayat of Fatehpur Biloch of Ballabhgarh mandal gave a six-acre plot to the centre on a lease of 30 years.

Land inspection will be carried out in November-end, following which construction of the centre will begin with due process.

The centre will provide a little more than primary healthcare facilities; it will have general outpatient departments.

“Not just OPDs, the centre will also have arrangements for surgery,” said D Pandav.
Dr Shashikant, responsible for managing the Fatehpur Biloch project, said over 20 villages in Haryana near the village where the centre is coming up, will benefit.

“Healthcare professionals will go door-to-door and take details of health of each family. A database will be prepared, tracking medical history of the people of the area,” said Dr Shashikant.

Emphasis will be on creating awareness about non-communicable diseases, which are rising in rural India.

Local doctors, paramedical staff, nurse and other health professionals will be trained in community medicine and issues specific to the area.
