Three people on a bike were killed on the spot after they hit a BMTC bus while overtaking a truck at Devagere cross near Kaggalipura on Monday evening.

The impact of the crash was such that the bike caught fire which then spread to the bus as well. Pradeep Kumar (28), a resident of Uttarahalli, Harish Kumar (25), a resident of Anjanapura and Basavaiah alias Avinash (24), a resident of Kanakapura are the deceased.

Major casualties were averted as all the passengers were able to get down from the bus as soon as it caught fire.

The police said Pradeep was a vegetable vendor, Harish worked with a welder and Basavaiah was a daily wage worker. They were returning to the city from Kaggalipura.

Rajesh Naik, the driver of the bus, was heading towards Kaggalipura from Kumbalgodu.

The bikers tried to overtake the truck and came to the extreme right. But they failed to notice the bus and rammed into the bus head-on. All three were not wearing the helmet. The head of one of the victims was split open due to impact and the other two also died due to severe head injuries. All the 20 passengers in the bus escaped unhurt, Naik said.

The police said it was very difficult to identify the deceased as the bike was entirely burnt and there was no identity proofs with the victims.

According to the Kaggalipura police, the accident happened due to rash driving by the motorist and that they had registered a case. All bodies have been shifted to Rajarajeshwari Medical Hospital.
