BMTC accidents: mayor cracks the whip

A day after two students were killed on the spot when a BMTC bus ran over them on Mysuru Road, Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun on Wednesday wrote to the managing director, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, to check the fitness certificates of all its buses.

“Many accidents have been reported in the BBMP limits, as per complaints received from the public. Hence, keeping in mind the safety of the public, I request that only those BMTC buses with fitness certificates be allowed to ply on the roads.” The mayor has also requested the BMTC to create awareness among its drivers on the importance of safe driving.

The two pre-university students were killed while another escaped with injuries when the speeding bus knocked them down when they were walking on a footpath at the Mysuru Road toll gate near Gopalan Mall on Tuesday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Chandrakanth (17), a native of Kalaburagi, and Yadu Kumar (18), a resident of RR Nagar. Rajashekar M (17), a resident of Bapuji Nagar, was injured. The three boys were studying in the BBMP PU college in KB Nagar, Mysuru Road. While Chandrakanth and Rajashekar M were first-year students, Kumar was a year senior.
