Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Monday launched ‘Wings’–an app based internet calling service in Karnataka. It lets users to make calls from Android, Windows and Apple iOS phones without a sim card.

During the launch, R Mani, the chief general manager telecom, Karnataka circle said: “Wings will give international/national roaming facilities, where customers can make calls to India while on international roaming at a cheaper rate. We have also offered free incoming calls in the roaming.”

Mani added, “Customers will get a 10-digit virtual number, which can be used to make or receive calls. Initially, we are offering a one-time registration fee of Rs 1099 with which the customers can make unlimited calls to any network in the country. Customers will only need an internet connection to use this app.”

BSNL is the first service provider in the country to launch an internet telephony service. Besides voice calls, Wings also offers video call facilities.

Fixed mobile convergence

The BSNL is also launching the fixed mobile convergence, where the users can converge all their incoming calls from BSNL fixed and mobile phone to one specified number.

“Usually, people prefer converging their incoming calls on mobile phones to a landline. This is the big thing happening abroad, which brings down the usage of mobile phone, provides good connectivity, and also is good for health. Convergence of landline to mobile will not work in roaming,” added Mani.
