Last Updated 24 August 2018, 17:30 IST

A director of a private engineering college was arrested along with three others, including the driver of a bus belonging to the institution, for criminal negligence.

The city police made the arrest after the driver ran the bus over an attender repairing the bus, lying underneath the vehicle. The attender died on the spot.

The victim has been identified as Manohar Kumar (20) from Hoodi, who recently joined the college.

According to the police, the incident happened on August 23 at 1.15 pm at the college premises located in Basavannanagar, Hoodi. The mini bus was parked in the parking lot adjacent to the college.

At 12.45 pm, Manohar had crawled under the bus to tighten the silencer as instructed by driver Manjunatha and transport in-charge Mohan Rao.

At 1.15 pm, Manjunatha started the bus unaware that Manohar was still lying beneath the vehicle doing repairs. The rear wheels ran over Manohar's head, killing him instantly. The police, who were informed immediately, rushed to the spot and shifted Manohar's body to Vydhehi Hospital for postmortem.

The Mahadevapura law and order police have registered a case under IPC Section 304-A (causing accidental death due to negligence) and booked the director of the college Gopalan, general manager Balachandar, Manjunatha and Rao.

"The college did not ensure any safety measures for the attender. The driver and the transport in-charge forgot that Manohar was repairing the bus, having instructed him to do that," a senior police official said. The college uses the bus to ferry students.

The police filed the case based on a complaint by Manohar's uncle. They are investigating further.
