The Parappana Agrahara police registered an FIR against a jail warder and a few others in connection with the death of a 21-year-old undertrial at the central prison four months ago.

The deceased, Syed Firoz, was a resident of Modi Road in DJ Halli. Arrested under the NDPS Act on January 9, he was remanded in judicial custody.

A few days into his judicial custody, the prison staff admitted Firoz at Victoria Hospital after he complained of severe pain in his right leg. Firoz passed away on January 23 due to complications arising from the infection in his leg.

Suspecting foul play by prison staff, his family alleged that Firoz was assaulted at the central prison, which caused his death. A magistrate ordered for an inquest and the police were directed to take up a detailed probe.

Based on the court’s directions, the police gathered evidence and medical reports from two reputed hospitals in the city. The reports stated that Firoz suffered from pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome arising from complications with regard to the injuries found on his body.

Meanwhile, the chief jail superintendent too ordered an inquiry. He learnt that a warder identified as Jabbar Patel had assaulted Firoz.

Based on the inquiry report, Patel was suspended by the chief jail superintendent. Further inquiry found that warder Patel had questioned Firoz for changing his barrack and staying with inmates in the adjacent barrack without the jail staff’s consent.

This led to a heated exchange between the two, following which Patel assaulted Firoz. Firoz sustained injuries in the incident and started experiencing pain in his leg which started swelling. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital but passed away, a senior police official said.

“We have taken up a case against the jail staff and booked them for murder. We are yet to summon and arrest the warder and others. The challenge is that we have no CCTV footage inside the jail barracks where the assault could have taken place,” a senior police officer said.
